Make It A Happy New Year For The Earth Too!

As we gather with our family and friends to usher in the New Year, lets stay aware of how what we do affects our environment. Feng Shui Master Diana Garber explains that 2017 is a year of major growth - think of Spring and all that blooms. Growth can also bring challenges, which is why we coined a phrase 'manage your environment consciously or unconsciously it manages you. Our action or inaction can result in weeds or blossoms'.

- To clear the bad energy from the home, try some orange essential oils or even fresh orange peels to add some positive energy to your home.

- Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods when cleaning your home. Harsh chemicals affect not just your home environment but wherever your drain lead.

- When spring cleaning, recycle and donate any goods still in usable condition to charities rather than throwing them away.

- If buying plants such as water narcissus, or small orange and tangerine trees, buy plants that you can keep afterwards in or around your home.

- If you can, compost cut flowers when their limited lifespan runs out.

- Invest in reusable decorations that can be used year after year to limit waste.

- Choose gifts with low amounts of packaging, or packaged in recycled or recyclable materials.

- If buying food gifts with individual portions, look for ones that don't have wrappers on each serving.

- Don't wrap gifts, or be creative and make the wrapping part of the gift, such as a silk scarf or beautiful box. You will cut down on paper wastage.

- For meals, consider having more vegetarian dishes - and beware of what seafood you order or cook. Stay away from shark fin soup and fish such as reef fish and deep-sea fish, as many are facing extinction.

- Be sure to feed the needy this CNY by donating to Feeding Hong Kong's food drive.

Self and Family
- Buying a new outfit for New Year's celebrations? Make sure that it is something you will wear again regularly, and not just end up at the back of your wardrobe!

- Heading for a family day out? Why not check out a natural area such as reserves or country parks. Just remember to take only photos and memories, and leave only your footprints.

- If burning incense or offerings, be aware of sparks which may land. Never leave something burning and walk away, for your own safety, and to prevent hill fires.

- Be very careful when handling fireworks and firecrackers. They contain harsh chemicals as well as the obvious explosive danger!

Chinese New Year is all about family, ancestors and generations to come. So it's a fantastic time to be aware of the new generations and what kind of world we are leaving for them. Also, learn from those generations into the past who navigated the traditions with fewer disposable items, harsh chemicals and waste, but just as much fun, good times and love!
