Reduce Carbon ‘Forkprint'
Deliveroo’s Plastic Cutlery Saving Initiative

Say goodbye to disposable chopsticks, knives, spoons and forks. Last month, Deliveroo introduced an ‘opt-in only’ for cutlery with many of its restaurant partners to help them reduce their overall carbon ‘forkprint’. Based on calculations on the number of cutlery sets saved over the past month, Deliveroo forecasts that their customers are on track to save over nine tonnes of plastic in a year’s time!

“In the current day and age, people are increasingly aware of the importance of sustainable consumption. At Deliveroo, we are constantly looking at ways to minimise waste and reduce our impact on the environment. Therefore I am extremely pleased to be taking the initiative to promote more sustainable practices and help consumers make green choices,” said Brian Lo, General Manager of Deliveroo.

Over 1,000 restaurants have already agreed to partner with Deliveroo on this initiative in the hope of reducing plastic waste. For every order that is placed, customers who don’t check a box to add cutlery to their order will not receive it in their delivery. By encouraging people to use their own set of utensils, it helps decrease throwaway culture and tackle sustainability.

Although plastic is durable, it is hard to break down and when it reaches the ocean, it poses a large threat to animals such as fish and seabirds that may mistake plastic pellets for food. Therefore changes that are made even on an individual scale such as reducing the use of plastic cutlery can have a big impact towards preserving the ocean and saving marine inhabitants.
