There’s nothing us Hong Kongers like better than a trip to the beach to relax, swim and have fun with our family and friends.
Unfortunately, many of us hesitate before jumping in the water these days, upon seeing the flotilla of trash that lines our shores and clogs our ocean and waterways. And it’s not just ugly; waste in our natural environment is a threat to our economy and even our personal health.
This is why we need you! Ecozine warmly invites you to join the 16th annual Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge – team registrations are NOW OPEN!
Signing up a team is as easy as 1-2-3:
1.     Get a group of colleagues, friends, family or community members together and choose your favorite beach, country trail or urban area;
2.     Pick a date between 1 September – 1 December, and;

What is the Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge?
Ecozine’s Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge is the region’s largest environmental volunteer event, having engaged over 170,000 participants and cleaned up more than 22 million pieces of trash from our beautiful shores and country parks.
We’re also part of something much bigger – something global. When you take part in the Cleanup Challenge, you’re joining millions of people around the world and contributing to a massive global database, which is used to look at solutions to this growing problem.
And it is growing. More than eight million kilograms of trash—equivalent to the weight of over 100 Boeing 737s—was collected by nearly 800,000 volunteers during Ocean Conservancy's 2015 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) – including more than 5 million pieces of trash collected right here in Hong Kong, by a record 75,623 local participants!
And this year promises to be even bigger. With ocean and shoreline trash becoming a major and urgent issue in Hong Kong, filling headlines locally and internationally, it is time for us ALL to step up, as a community and take part – to make a difference, learn something new, contribute to citizen science, and of course, have fun!

Running the Hong Kong Cleanup is a labour of love, and we are truly grateful for the efforts of every citizen who participates. Yet, as we continue to grow in numbers, at a rate of 30% per year, in the current economy we can no longer depend solely on corporate sponsorship to sustain the Hong Kong Cleanup. Meanwhile, many teams have indicated they would be happy to support by paying a minimal registration fee for their participation in the Challenge.
So, we have listened to you, and put the power in your hands. The 2016 team registration process will include a small fee, based on company size or organisation type. Your registration will ensure our ability to continue running this well-loved community event, and to provide you with the support you need for your cleanup!
Your registration fee will cover administrative and hard costs, and you will receive a pack of materials and benefits including a yearlong subscription to Ecozine, a high-tech tshirt and reusable water bottle from Tsunami Sport, participation in a how-to seminar, guides, tips, invitations, and much more!

We truly hope that you will join us for this year's Cleanup Challenge, which is shaping up to be the biggest yet! Remember to register soon to secure your favourite cleanup site. By registering a team for the Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge, you are making a positive impact on Hong Kong’s environment, and the natural world. If you have questions about any part of the process, don’t hesitate to contact the HKC team by phone (2868-5585) or email (
