5 ways to bring more mindfulness into your life

It’s easy to lose sight of things that are important these days. Whether you’re working hard at your job or tending to a busy family, it’s easy to forget about personal maintenance. Your inner psyche and energy should come first. It’s surprising how little time it takes to work on being present.

Being mindful is a simple task and something that Saint Belford advocates in its 2018 Curation “Lifestyle Curator” diary. But if you don’t know where to start, you aren’t alone. Here are a few different ways that you can start being more mindful each and every day of your life.

1. Breathe

This is the simplest way to be more mindful, as all it requires is for you to breathe in and breathe out while focusing. It’s that easy. Our parents would often tell us to ‘take a breath’ if something was troubling us, if we were crying, or if we were in a bad mood in general. That simple piece of advice is still applicable. Breathing deeply during a stressful situation (while counting to three on the inhale, hold, and exhale) can bring your attention back to reality and away from whatever stress has you ticked at the moment. It’s very powerful and very simple to do.

2. Connect to each day

Being mindful in your life means connecting to your life. Connections between your surroundings, your situation, and your feelings about them are essential to becoming more grounded in life and in yourself. It’s simple to connect to large emotional moments but, to truly connect, you need to be mindful of the smaller ones.

3. Be present in your daily work

This is a great segue from our last point. Too often, we let the small moments slip by. It’s in these moments—like daily chores— that we can take the proper time to be mindful. For example, we imagine that you tend to do your dishes with the intent of ‘getting them done’. You want it to be over. Instead of using this line of thinking, try and sit in the moment you’re in. Feel the dishes becoming cleaner as you work. The bubbles are melting and popping around your hands. The towel is making the dishes new again.

This method of creating mindfulness can be applied to any chore or make-work project you have. It can help you feel connected to the work itself, which gives both the work and your life more meaning. 4. Be attentive to things you can control

When you are mindful of things within your sphere of influence, you can get to a place that relaxes you much more effectively. The importance of attention to things you can control in your life allows you to become much more present. You will definitely feel more in control of the situation, no matter how long you take to process the event. Life’s too short to become overwhelmed or to overreact to small issues.

5. Strengthen one quality or goal

As you go through your pursuit of mindfulness, you’ll see that visualisation is a powerful tool in your personal-improvement arsenal. Goal setting is also crucial to success. Many people tend to focus on more than one goal at once or try to remedy more than one personal quality at a time. To be more mindful in your life, it’s important to focus your energy on one task at a time. One goal is plenty for your energy to handle.

A mindful person has a healthy spirit

Instead of spending time worrying about stresses in your life, take a moment to breathe and enjoy the world in which you exist. With some new and healthy habits and a renewed focus on what’s important to you, you’ll be well on your way toward a more mindful existence. With an improved outlook on life, you’ll find that you’ll become a more positive person overall.
