In just under 10 years, over 7,134 rhino have been killed for their horns in South Africa by illegal poachers. Now, more rhino are killed per year than are born. At this rate, experts predict that wild rhino will be extinct by 2020. The Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF)—which focuses on the protection of endangered wildlife and vegetation; environmental education; and community upliftment in the Southern Cape of South Africa—launched the Rainbow Rhino Initiative to protect the rhinos and counter poaching in South Africa.

GCF and Rainbow Rhino Mission

Raising funds for Rainbow Rhino, Devon Naude and Tristan Sandwith from the Table Mountain Bikers Club (Cape Town) will tackle the epic Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek.

The October 15–21 seven-day mountain bike race, presented by Biogen, starts off from the Gondwana Game Reserve in South Africa and covers a gruelling 572 kilometres. The riders aim to raise R1000 per km (US $75) or R572 000 ($44,000) for the GCF. Funds raised in the 2017 Cape Pioneer Trek will be used to secure vital training equipment needed for rangers, including night vision glasses and safety equipment, as well as to subsidise training courses over the next 12 months.

Funds raised in 2016 helped to complete the anti-poaching training facility on the 11,000 hectare Big 5 reserve, as well as to purchase a rhino cow and calf to add to the core breeding population.

How the Initiative will fight illegal poaching

Gondwana feels that the Cape Pioneer Trek is a fantastic platform to raise awareness for the GCF's Rainbow Rhino Initiative, which has three tactical approaches to fighting rhino extinction.

1. Establish a counter poaching training camp that sponsors courses focusing on tracking, forensics and drone surveillance.
2. Develop a core breeding population of rhino from which a custodianship program can be launched, distributing new founder populations of rhino throughout Africa, together with trained anti-poaching units.
3. Partner with technology companies to create interactive awareness of rhino relocations through the latest GPS and drone technology.
